Tips that have worked for me while losing the first 122 lbs

Basically, I’ve kept to a few of the basic principles of the 17 Day Diet plan.  I do have warm lemon water every morning.  Not only do I feel this has helped with the weight loss, but I feel that  it’s helped my skin tremendously!  I have a problem area just under my right jawline.  Used to break out ALL THE TIME.  It’s still got a bit of scarring, actually, but a bit of makeup takes care of it, however, I just do not have the problems with it that I used to have.  I’m so very grateful that it’s cleared up nearly 100%!

I’m the first to admit that I’m a bit vain.  There are certain things we are happy with when it comes to our appearance.  My hair, I have to admit, I kinda love it.  My fingers, they are long and I love that.  I don’t mind my face.  I’m happy with it.  I love that I’m tall.  I’m 5’10”  I always wanted to be 6′, but I’ll take 5’10”.  Now, there are things I’m not happy with, as are all us women, but I’m ok with these things… Anyway, lemon water, check.  Good with that.

Water.  I LOVE WATER!  I think I carry a bottle with me just about everywhere I go.  Water and Iced Tea.  I once gave up Soda for lent when I was in my early teens.  It was probably the best thing I ever did… Since then… Water and Iced Tea have pretty much been my staple.  I’ve also been pretty blessed that I’m just not that much of a drinker.  The occasional drink I’ll do, but I’ve just never really been a drinker.  I don’t crave it, I sometimes forget I even have it in the room downstairs.  We do buy a few bottles on occasion when we take a drive up to the finger lakes up in New York, but when I say blessed, I’m strictly talking about caloric content here… just it’s so much easier to never have to count liquid calories if you don’t intake them… EVER.  Anyway, back to water… I drink alot of COLD water, which I read that the body takes energy to warm up, and that burns calories to get that energy going… so that’s cool!

Probiotics, two a day.  Love yogurt, so I love getting this in.  I’ve always enjoyed getting some sort of dairy type of food in, so this is a no-brainer for me.

I do try to get some raw vegetables in.  I read that the body takes more energy to process them and more energy usually means burns more calories, which is always good…. raw carrots is usually my choice.

I eat lots of meals throughout the day… sometimes even more than the 5 or 6 you read about… I sort of just graze… like a cow.  Not necessarily on the weekends… sometimes those get away from me.  Too busy.  It’s so much easier at work when I’m not as actively running around everywhere.

I like to get use of MUFA’s… (MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acid) which I am almost convinced help me lose weight better.  My favorites are:  Olive Oil, Avocado and Dark Chocolate.  I don’t have tons of these (Except the Olive Oil, which is basically in my daily diet), but I do have them from time to time and do feel they help.

Protein:  I like to have this several times a day… maybe 3, 4 at the most (not in huge quantities) but again, read that your body burns more energy processing it… so therefore burns more calories…

Plus, I obviously exercise… I try to minimally do 30 minutes at minimum of 5 days a week of cardio and I add toning and firming exercises to that at least 4 days a week.

From time to time, not all the time, maybe once every couple of months?  I may have a crazy, no holds barred meal.  This has usually been followed by a HUGE, INSANE loss!

We are Marie, 49, and Ivan,58. We used to live on the East Coast and are now living in Southern California. Marie grew up in Southern California and Ivan was born and raised in Kent, England. We met while playing a word game online and Ivan hopped over the pond to marry me. He says that he would have moved to the moon if that was where I resided! We plan on traveling out our days together when we retire... in an RV, but that won't be happening for a while. I have an amazing son, Christopher and he makes me so proud! 1. I’ve started doing the lemon water as well! So far I can’t say I’ve noticed a huge difference other than its a nice alternative to tasting plain water! Ha! I’m sort of a nut when it comes to claims like lemon water doing tons of amazing things and I searched around online and couldn’t find much in the area of scientific studies to suggest that it really does anything, but I’m not giving up on it just yet!! I feel like I’ve heard too many positive things from people that do add it into their clean eating routine! Plus I figure what’s the harm, it’s just lemon!

    • I’ve been doing the lemon water since March, 2012… so maybe that’s long enough? I can’t say that I noticed it right away either, but truly… maybe 5-6 months in? That’s when my skin truly starting clearing up. That’s truly the biggest change. As for the weight loss being a huge bonus? It’s really hard to contribute it to the lemon water… but surely I won’t be stopping it lol

  2. I really enjoyed this post! I wish you’d include a post about what you eat though! That would be so helpful to people like me who are trying to lose weight…I saw that you said you graze all day, can you tell us what you graze on just to give us some more ideas about how you were so incredibly successful? Also, the lemon water? Is that just warm water with lemon added? How many cups and when do you have it? Thanks…hope to see more posts like this one!

    • I actually just have a normal cup (like a cup of tea size) of warm water with lemon in it. I use the liquid lemon and just squeeze some in it, not much, a squirt or two.. and then get to work, have my hot tea and my vitamins and supplements (glucosamine for my joints, vitamin C, multi, some prescribed meds), then about 1/2 hour later, I enjoy a yogurt with flaxseed. Maybe an hour later or so, I’m looking for more protein… so maybe a hardboiled egg or some turkey or chicken meat, maybe nibble on some raw veggies, cucumbers or carrots. Then have some fruit… prunes or apple or pear or something at around 10:45’ish. Throughout all this, I’m having water… so up for more if my bottle is empty. This fills me up. 12:30’ish is my lunch break at work, so I usually have some protein and vegetables. Whether it’s chicken, turkey or fish and then whatever veg I want (broccoli, carrots, green beans, etc)… By 2 pm, I’m taking more fruit… prunes, apples or pear or red grapes… then if hungry, either some sort of protein or munching on veg.. then around 3:45 or 4 pm, another yogurt with flaxseed… (I need this for my cholesterol, so I’d check with your doctor… don’t just adopt this into your plan)… and I get home around 5-5:30, I do about an hour of exercise, cardio mostly with some toning exercises, then eat dinner, which is always a protein and a vegetable. That’s it… oh, and always more water. Always. lol I have green tea with every meal, too… did I say that? that’s it. That’s my day… day in and day out lol I do from time to time, add some carbs to my meals, but if I do that, it’ll be to my lunch, where I’ll add some black beans or some sort of bean, or maybe a squash or that type of carb… Also, from time to time, I’ll have some dark chocolate… that I’d probably do in the morning, whenever I add a carb, I try to have it as early in the day as possible, never later in the day… and if I add avocado, which I love to do, I’d have it in an egg white scramble, which would be a breakfast thing for me, and those usually happen on the weekends, just do to having more time, so yogurts are usually my breakfasts during weeks, not weekends, unless I’m driving somewhere and it’s just easier. Hope that helps!

  3. That’s great! thanks for that! Very helpful indeed. You are such an inspiration! Hope you get to where you want to be, I know you will!;)
